On Wednesday, September 26, TRECA Digital Academy students made their way to Wilkesville, OH to visit Union Ridge Wildlife Center! Over 20 students and their families braved the rain to discover and learn about wildlife rehabilitation.
Union Ridge is home to dozens of rescued animals. The owner, Cy, is the only licensed wildlife rehabilitation expert in southern Ohio. He is a social worker by day, and rehabilitation specialist by night. Students learned why many of the animals were there and what we can all do to help prevent animals from needing to be re-homed. Cy introduced students to several animals including:
- Ruby, the red-tailed hawk
- Raggedy Ann, the bald eagle that was shot by a farmer
- Gumby, the lame camel who was given a 10% chance of walking and beat the odds
- Noah, the tiger who was orphaned after being used as a picture cub at a resort
- Elizabeth, the tiger who was left homeless after being a school district mascot
- And many more!
After the tour, students completed stations to explore more connection between different sciences and the animals found around the center. Thank you to Union Ridge Wildlife Center for hosting us! We learned so much about wildlife rehab, and the time and effort that goes into it.
